The tragic death of ten year old Shahla Sarin in a Government school in Sultan Batheri by a snake bite has brought to the surface the deep malaise of the education system in Kerala. At every step, it demonstrated how hollow are our claims to leadership in education, health and civilised behaviour. Once again, the world was aghast at the contradictions between statistical claims like total literacy, high standard school education, laced with high tech and the reality. What happened at the school might not happen in any part of the civilised world. The reaction of the rest of the world was the same as in the case of Sabarimala: “Why do the bright Malayalees behave irrationally and cruelly in moments of crises?” They will again be confused between literacy and brilliance. A.....

The latest reports from the UN on Korea are confusing to say the least. An initiative taken by some Europeans and others to authorise the UN Security Council to hold a meeting on 10 December 2019 to discuss the human rights situation in North Korea has been abandoned as the United States has changed its mind and refused to sign a letter that would have authorised the UN Security Council to hold a meeting. The Council does not have the minimum number of nine votes to support the move. The US position is astonishing as the US has always favoured human rights issues being brought up at the UN Security Council to impose sanctions against erring nations. It had even proposed that the Human Rights Council should be given the power to take action against nations which vio.....

Sufism, the mystical tradition of Islam, which has been evolved over centuries from Hijra two hundred, marks a paradigm shift in the classical Islamic philosophy. Philosophy as such is revolved around scholasticism and rational interpretation of theological concepts, whereas Sufism focused on esoteric and mystical dimensions of faith and practice. Sufism developed its own terms, jargons and vocabulary. The analytical tools and method of study of Sufism too was unique. The very word 'sufi' was new to Islamic culture when it is added to the Islamic terminology during the early Umayyad period. Proudly enough, the Sufis considered themselves as the first rankers of the Islamic fraternity, the true inheritors of the 'People of Suffa' who enjoyed the day night companionshi.....

My New Year tweet was “Freeze CAA, suspend protests till the Supreme Court verdict and do not derail development and foreign policy. This is the pledge that all Indians should take on New Year Day to save the nation.” This is a practical way out of the current quagmire in the country. Nothing idealistic, dogmatic or utopian. Quite obviously, there is no hurry to implement CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), protests and destruction of lives and property are pointless and the dawn of the New Year is a good time for contemplation if not for reconciliation. India appears to be at a cross roads nationally and internationally as we move from the old year to the new. The upheaval in the country is based more on perception than reality. There has also been critici.....

Several years ago, the then Defence Minister George Fernandez predicted that China would go down via Pakistan in the west and Myanmar in the east in a pincer movement to suffocate India and to dominate South Asia. They have already built the Gwadar port in Pakistan and Hambantota in Sri Lanka to have access to the Indian Ocean and now they are building a third port in Myanmar to complete the encirclement of India. President Xi Jinping went to Myanmar to give final touches to his grand strategy to tighten his grip on Myanmar through his Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to build railroads, highways, ports, and other infrastructure connecting China with other points in Asia, Europe, and Africa. Thomas Mann immortalised Davos in the Swiss Alps in his intriguing novel, ‘The Magic Mountain’ which reflected his experiences and impressions after visiting a sanatorium there, when his wife, suffering from a lung complaint, was undergoing treatment in 1912. He enjoyed the beauty and tranquility of the little village and became acquainted with the team of dedicated doctors, who were looking after his wife. Davos became a ski resort, sought after by the rich and famous from year to year. After sunset, the skiers sat near fireplaces and began chatting about the problems of the times and returned with new insights. The fireplace chats became more significant than skiing and became an institution established in 1971 by Professor Klaus Schwab as.....

But it did worse than even the prophets of doom had predicted as its framework was a sharp departure from decades of American policy, not to speak of the international consensus. The United States has long voiced support for the creation of a Palestinian state with only slight adjustments to the Israeli boundaries that existed.....
