24th IFFK
A 'Solanas'tic Journey into Third Cinema

The 24th IFFK focuses on a strong repartee against invasion through the means of powerful cinema this year.

Fernando Solanas’s films have always been
an inspiration to film directors aspiring to tread paths away from the usual  Hollywood and European styles of film making. His films portray strong political themes as a representation of his active political life. Four of his films, Hour of the Furnace (Part 1), South, Tango, Exile of Gradel and The Journey,  and a documentary, A Journey to the Fumigated Towns,  will be screened under the category ‘ Toward Third Cinema’  at the festival.

The first show of the category, The Hour of the Furnace, set in the context of Argentina's socio-political conditions in the sixties, was nominated for the British Film Award for Best Cinema in 1974. Following its debut at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival, South, had collected a host of awards from prestigious international film festivals. The Tango-Exile of Gredel goes by the theme of Argentine immigrants seeking their identity in Paris, while The Journey tells the tale of a teenage boy who crosses Latin America in search of his father, himself, and his American continental identity. A Journey to the Fumigated Towns is a documentary that explores the filmmaker's journey across seven Argentine provinces, investigating the social and environmental consequences of the transgenic agricultural model with agricultural toxins.

The lengendary Argentine film director, screenwriter and political personality, is being awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his powerful contributions towards “Third Cinema” at the festival, which is to kick start on December 6.
